LAUREEN LANGER, D.D.S.
Dr. Laureen Langer, received her dental degree from Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery in 1982, where she also obtained her Certificate in Periodontology in 1984. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and a Fellow of the Academy of Osseointegration.
She held the rank of Associate Clinical Professor of Dentistry at Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery and was Co-director of the Implant Program in the Post-Graduate division of Periodontics where she has taught implant surgery for over 18 years.
Dr. Langer was honored to be one of three periodontists to be chosen to give the first live video surgical demonstration to the Academy of Periodontology in 1993. In this “Afternoon with the Masters” series, Dr. Langer performed periodontal plastic surgery by live broadcast to over 1200 periodontists. She was recently featured in Women in Dentistry.
Dr. Langer has been published in the Journal of Periodontology, The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants and has authored chapters in five textbooks on the subject of periodontal surgery, gingival recession and implants. She has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally in over 20 countries from Europe to Egypt and Asia.
She was President of the Osseointegration Foundation from 2001-2002 and President of the Northeastern Society of Periodontists in 2002.
In 2006 she received the Hirschfeld Award for Clinical Excellence from the Northeastern Society of Periodontists.
BURTON LANGER, D.M.D.
Dr. Burton Langer earned his dental degree from Tuffs School of Dental Medicine. He received his Certificate in Periodontics and Masters Degree in Science from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry in 1966.
He was a former Associate Clinical Professor of Periodontics and the Director of Post Graduate Clinical Periodontics at Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He is currently on the staff of Beth Israel Medical Center.
Dr. Langer was one of the first periodontists trained in osseointergration by Professor Per-Ingvar Branemark in 1983. His development of new modalities of therapy, such as the early re-entry procedure for bone grafts, the ridge augmentation procedure, the subepithelial connective tissue graft and various flap procedures for implants, have become standard methods of treatment.
Dr. Langer has lectured extensively throughout the world, has written over 40 articles, and chapters in 6 textbooks, many of which have original concepts that have enhanced the clinical practice of periodontics and implant dentistry. He is the 1992 recipient of the Hirschfeld Award for Clinical Excellence and the 1997 recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology Master Clinician Award.
One of the most frequently asked questions that we hear is “What is the difference between the degrees of D.D.S. and D.M.D.?” The answer is that they are educationally the same. It only depends upon which institution granted the degree in dentistry.
